• This individual is the primary liaison with local law enforcement (both MPD and SCS)
• Responsible for recruiting and maintaining block captains
• Maintaining a current roster (with the help of block captains) of all volunteers
• Maintaining and communicating all crimes both up and down the chain
• Coordinating annual training with law enforcement
• Delegating responsibility to volunteers to help with the above tasks

• Responsible for recruiting window watchers, sub captains, volunteers
• Maintaining a current roster of block volunteers
• Maintaining a list of neighbors for your block (could be 1 or more streets)
• Distributing information from Chairperson
• Gathering and forwarding information from your Block to Chairperson
• Organizing Security audits and/or night patrols
• Delegating responsibility to volunteers to help with the above tasks

• Distributing information from Block Captain
• Gathering and forwarding information from your sub section to Block Captain

• Reporting anything suspicious to your Sub Captain/Block Captain (whichever applies)
• Help in setting up block parties and meeting for your Block
• Looking out for your neighbor by gathering newspapers that may be piling up (a sign that no one’s home)
• Responding to home alarms…coordinating appropriate responses with your neighbor ahead of time
• Baking/bringing refreshments for meetings and block parties

• Neighborhood Watch Volunteers are not vigilantes. They are extra eyes and ears for reporting crime and helping neighbors. Neighborhood Watch helps build pride and serves as a springboard for efforts that address our community concerns.

• Someone screaming or shouting for help
• Someone looking into windows and parked cars
• Unusual noises
• Property being taken out of houses where no one is at home or a business is closed
• Cars, vans, or trucks moving slowly with no apparent destination, or without lights
• Anyone being forced into a vehicle
• A stranger sitting in a car or stopping to talk to a child
• Abandoned cars.

• How To Report

• Give your name and address.
• Briefly describe the event - what happened, when, where, and who was involved.
• Describe the suspect: sex and race, age, height, weight, hair color, clothing, distinctive characteristics such as beard, mustache, scars, tattoos or accent.
• Describe the vehicle if one was involved: color, make, model, year, license plate, and special features such as stickers, dents, or decals.

Our biggest issue right now is theft. Theft from vehicles and from garages. However, in most of the reported cases, the vehicle was left unlocked and the garage door left open. The thief is an opportunist who attacks at night looking for an easy target. Since he attacks on bike, wearing camouflage from head to toe, using the dark cart paths to escape. He loved unlocked cars and trucks parked on the street, but has actually been brazen enough to go into driveways and ride across lawns. We have had several sightings and good descriptions reported to us and are very close to discovering his name and address.

Our next biggest issue is our false sense of security. Crime can occur anywhere and the easier the opportunity the more likely the crime. We need to educate ourselves and take sensible precautions for or persons and property. Simple things like leaving outside lights on, adding light timers to interior lights, stopping the paper on vacations, locking all windows and doors when you close them, trimming bushes/trees that may provide cover, locking car doors if left in drive or on street. You don’t have to live in fear, just be aware. Make yourself a harder target.

The third biggest issue is speeding. Houses sit on both sides of our streets many with small children. The possibility and probability of a fatal accident rise with speed. Ask any of your neighbors on Cordova Club Road if they see a lot of speeding. Cordova Club Road has become a Germantown Road bypass and most everyone that travels it is going 40 MPH or more. It has been suggested that we have a reception party where we stand along the road and encourage safe driving speeds. To help get the point across even further, we would ask the help of our police departments to furnish radar signs and/or speed traps.
